History of the company
dates back to September 25, 1915.
The place where the plant
was erected was formerly called Tchernorechye, by the name of a brook Tchernaya
(“Black”) which flows into the Oka river.
It was here, “on the land
of a state summer residence in Tchernorechye of Balakhna district, 30 versts
from Nizhny Novgorod, at the station Rastyapino, in one and a half versts from
the Oka river”, that a plant of mineral acids was established, future
Tchernorechensky Chemical Plant, and now – LLC “Korund”.
In October 1916 sulfuric
and nitric acid production was set in operation.
On November
22, 1920 first tons of
superphosphate were produced. Following superphosphate there were built
production capacities for alumina, copper vitriol and Glauber’s salt.
Later on the defining words
in the history of the plant have become “the
first”, “the only” and “unique”.
Dozens of chemicals have been produced here for the first time in the country.
The enterprise is unique because
most of the floors work by their own technologies, developed by the plant
specialists. The enterprise has always owned a unique research base and served testing ground for development of
new technologies; the experience of their application was afterwards shared
with other companies of the industry. Modern chemical enterprises all over the
country are now using technological experience of Tchernorechensky Plant.

In 1925
there was started construction of ammonium sulfate, red phosphorus and
calcium carbide plants, and the first
in the country floor of ammonia synthesis. The day of launching the floor
– February 9, 1928 – is considered to be birthday of Russian nitrogen industry.

In the
1930s, as a result of development of watch and precision instrument-making
industry, it was decided to build the
first in the country production of synthetic corundum.
In 1936 the first home pilot unit for
corundum growing was launched, and by 1938 corundum production had been
mastered.

In
1941, already in the first month of the war, production of a legendary
antitank self-inflammable liquid “KS” was organized at Tchernorechye.
In September 1941 a
production floor of cyanides was put into operation. Its products were
applied for steel hardening for military purposes.

During the war delivery of
potassium nitrate was completed to produce gunpowder. Ammonia output was increased
to the maximum. Altogether there were 18 types of new chemicals, production of
which was completed at the plant in the war period.
On May 8, 1943, for performance of governmental defense
tasks, Tchernorechensky Chemical Plant was awarded Order of the Red Banner of
Labour.
In the post-war 1950s the
plant chemists obtained the first domestic
antituberculous preparation PASK, and first
in the country there was developed and introduced a hexachloran technology.
During the 1950s corundum
production expanded, first crystals
of dark-red ruby were grown, and technologies of alexandrite, sapphire,
amethyst and topaz growth were developed for jewellery applications.
In the 1960s thread guide
production for textile industry was mastered.
On September
25, 1965 the plant was
awarded a second Order of the Red Banner of Labour.
During the 1970s there was
put into operation a floor of household chemical goods, built a large-capacity
production of liquid sulfurous anhydride, a new floor for potassium
ferrocyanide was launched, urea and synthetic detergent production floors were
put into operation, and the first in
the country frothing agent production was created.

In 1971
the first domestic polyisocyanate
was produced – the main component for obtaining polyurethane foam. In 1978
there was built the first in the
country floor to produce flexible polyurethane foam compounds for automotive
and furniture industries.

With the development of
defense technologies and advent of laser oscillations unique methods were designed and first rod corundums for laser active components were created.
In 1974 the plant started
commercial production of laser rubies.
In the 1980s there were
built production departments of polyurethane foam blocks and PVC pipes.
In the 1990s the enterprise
suffered a crisis, like the whole chemical industry in the country.

It was in 2004 that the
company began to revive.
On April
30, 2004 the
material complex “Korund” was sold at an auction. A new owner has come to the
enterprise, and since then a new life has begun for one of the oldest
chemical plants of Russia.

On September 25, 2005 the
plant celebrates its 90th anniversary.
